Understanding SMS Credits

Learn how SMS credits are consumed when sending messages in Udext

Udext subscription tiers are based on SMS credit limits, which determine how many messages you can send within your plan. Each message sent through the platform consumes SMS credits, with usage calculated based on message length, content, and delivery method.

These credit usage guidelines follow industry standards set by carriers, so understanding how they work will help you plan your communication effectively and avoid unexpected usage.

How SMS Credits Work

SMS credits are primarily based on message length and content.

Message Length:

  1. 1–160 characters = 1 segment

  2. 161–306 characters = 2 segments

  3. 307–459 characters = 3 segments

  4. 460–612 characters = 4 segments

This means longer messages will consume more credits per recipient.

Factors That Increase SMS Credit Usage

Certain message types and content may use additional credits:

  • Translations: Messages sent using translation will use double credits due to character encoding differences (GSM vs non-GSM).

  • Emojis: Emojis count as non-GSM characters and may increase credit usage.

  • Voice Features:

    • Voice calls use 3 credits per minute per contact

    • Voicemail (call forwarding) uses 5 credits per minute

  • MMS Images: Sending images (PNG or JPEG) uses 3 credits per contact.
